50 Watt MR16 LED Replacements Guide

blog-50-watt-mr16-led-replacement-buying-guide When most of us shop for light bulbs, we search by the shape and then the wattage. Naturally, we've been trained this way because that's how light bulbs are typically sold in their incandescent or halogen form. However, when shopping for LED replacements, there is a different way to shop for them.

Understanding MR16 Halogen Light Bulbs

MR16 halogen bulbs are sold in either 35 Watt or 50 Watt versions; depending on how much light you want. We know that if we want more light, we choose the 50 Watt bulb. Unfortunately, when shopping for MR16 LED bulbs, we shouldn't shop that way.

How to Buy a 50 Watt LED Equivalent Light Bulb

All 50 Watt MR16 light bulbs produce a certain amount of light; measured in lumens. Of course, not all MR16 halogen light bulbs produce equal amounts, but the expected amount of light is something we are aware of because we put them in! From the technical side, a 50 Watt MR16 halogen bulb should produce around 500 lumens. So, when you're shopping for MR16 LED bulbs to replace your 50 Watt MR16 halogen, its important to check that it does produce at least 500+ lumens.

Don't Be Fooled

There are many MR16 LED bulbs in the market. Unfortunately, that means even if two MR16 LED bulbs state they both use 7 Watts, one may actually only produce 500+ lumens and the other may only produce as much as a 35 Watt halogen. So, be sure to check the initial lumens on the box. Just so you know, a 35 Watt MR16 LED Replacement produces around 300+ lumens.
